Rags To Riches Game Online
From right to left:
1. City jail. You begin near here and I'm pretty sure you have had close encounters with this site a lot. Did you know? The cop sends you to jail because the long beard gives you as a vagabond. In later parts of the game, you can visit a barber and thus avoid the jail! However, the beard does grow back so maintenance is required. Since it is costly I suggest that you forget about it for a while.
2. Next is the 24 Hour Store, which is, thank God, open 24 hours (duh). When you enter, they give you 2 cents per bottle that you carry. If you enter without holding any bottles, you can fill the rest/food meter by 5 units in exchange for a dollar. Thus, you should spend at least one dollar here when you begin the game, lest you want to see the dreaded game-over screen too soon.
3. The soup kitchen is open from 11AM all the way to 7PM (since night begins at 8PM and ends at 6AM). Here you fill your rest/food meter entirely for free. What I do, is to go back and forth between the 24 hour store and the soup kitchen, until it's 11AM, and picking up useful items along the way.
4. Next up is the pawn shop. I suggest that you sell your subway ticket here for a dollar. It is the purple/magenta 'block' at the top left of the information subscreen. If you use the ticket to go into another part of the city soon, you will find it difficult, since things are more costly than in the current area, and going back requires the purchase of another ticket.
5. The City Hotel, which is open only at night, charges $2 for rest. I usually stay in the Roach Hotel, not on this one. Not because of the roaches, of course.
6. The subway ticket booth, which is open at all hours too, charges $2 for a subway ticket. Again, avoid this for now.
7. The subway entrances (North, East, South, West) lead you to the other parts of the city, provided you have a ticket. I could not verify this, but going through the entrance for the same part of the city which you are in leads you nowhere. at the waste of the ticket. so it is important to remember in which part of the city you are in.
8. Terminal Lunch is open 24 hours but is very expensive at $4. I don't remember how much of your rest/food meter does it fill. Avoid it for now, although it becomes useful when you have more money and thus more freedom to move among the city parts, since it lies near the subway entrances.
9. Nates' Wines. You can sell bottles here (for 2 cents apiece), or you can raise your alcohol meter by 4 units for $2 if you enter without having any bottles on hand.
Now, the following are about the most important in the beginning of the game. Build your money stash here, and when you have at least one or perhaps two $10 bills, consider moving on to the next part of the city (of your choice).
10. The Roach Hotel, open at night only as well, charges $2 per stay.
11. The South City Meat Packing Store gives you a job but only if you arrive at 1PM, which is rarely the case for Day 1. However, remember that this job will take time and will take from the meters, so watch out. However, the most important use for this store is not the job, but the fact that you can purchase five bones for a dollar (you can not carry more than five bones). Keep on reading.
12. Stans' Market works like the 24 Hour Store, except that it closes at night. Here, you can keep your rest/food meter high, and you can also sell bottles. This is important. Why? Keep on reading!
13. The junkyard is very important. If you have a bone, you can use it to entertain the dog so that you can pick up five bottles (this is automatic upon entrance). It is available at all hours.
The strategy is as follows. Make sure you have a healthy bone stash by purchasing five bones at the packing store. Go to the junkyard and get five bottles. Now sell them at Stans' Market. In the long run, $1 worth of bones will get you $5 worth of money. However, this takes time so you should keep an eye on the rest/food meter. Use Stans' to 'keep it up'. Now keep on looping between Stans' and the junkyard until you need more bones which you get again at the packing store. Another thing to keep an eye on is night-time, as it becomes more dangerous if you hadn't noticed, especially because most stores close at that time. (When a thief or cop comes, I stand in front of an open store and time it so that I enter before they catch me, but that when I exit they are not still passing by. It takes practice, but it helps. Unfortunately, this can not always be done.) Thus, when it is late and night is coming, make sure you head on to the Roach Hotel.
Did you know?
1. The thief steals $1 bills only. It does not steal coins, $10 bills, or from the larger money stash.
2. If you thought the thief was mean, wait until you see the IRS at higher levels. Prepare to build upon that patience.
3. In other parts of the city, you can rent a resting place for more than one night, which is pretty useful. provided that you can afford it.
4. The rest/food meter drops for about 1 unit per hour.
5. The alcohol meter drops a bit slower, but still, NOT as much as 1 unit per 1 1/2 hours.
6. I could not verify this, but resting at a hotel restores the rest/food meter to a certain minimum, if it was under that.
7. Above the rest/food meter there are two meters: The high meter is a 'high school' meter. The college meter is a 'college/university' meter. (It will be awhile before you can work with these two.)
P.S. Congratulations Kim, on such a great site. I wonder. will you be making a guide section? You can use this until someone comes up with a better guide!
